The New State of Supolinia, also known simply as Supolinia is a failed state. Considered one of the most dangerous places in Avaris, Supolinia has been under the anarchic and brutal control of the Neo-Zendirist and accelerationist Guard of the Storm since 2023.

History

After being settled by the people now known as the Supolinians, the islands that made up what is modern Supolinia were split amongst several petty kingdoms, which frequently warred with each other, merged, or dissolved. Eventually, one of these petty kingdoms, led by a man that would be known as Oskar the Great, managed to unify these islands under one banner; his own. Proclaiming himself High King of the Supolinian Isles, Oskar would create a new kingdom, one that would surpass any seen in Supolinian history; the High Kingdom of Supolinia.

This kingdom would prosper under Oskar the Great’s dynasty, known as the High House of Supolinia, and while it did not expand, it didn’t need to, as the Supolinians were self-reliant and required few resources. Unfortunately, that meant they were also rather behind technologically compared to the rest of the world, something that would begin to anger the people of Supolinia.

Eventually, this anger was pointed outward by the then High King, Oskar IV, who claimed that Supolinia was under pressure from outside forces to remain the weak, insignificant island chain it was, and that these outside powers were threats to the Supolinian people. Of course, it's known now that Oskar IV was preparing his people for war against the outside world in an attempt to carve a larger empire for himself, but this would backfire spectacularly on him.

An organization, the National Revolutionary Union of the Supolinian People, agreed with the idea that outside forces were preventing Supolinia from progressing, but further believed that the High King and his supporters were the outside powers’ puppets, and that in order to make Supolinia as powerful as it could be, the High King and his followers must be removed from power. In 1921, they would overthrow the High King, execute him and his family, and establish an ultranationalist dictatorship that can best be described as “proto-Zendirist”.

This proto-Zendirist state, known as the Supolinian Revolutionary Free State, would purge any and all suspected “foreign spies” in the country, and clamp down hard on any and all civil liberties, claiming they were “obstacles to hegemony”. The Revolutionary Free State’s leadership would further claim that in order to expand Supolinia’s territory, it first must be “cleansed” from the inside in a national rebirth, where the weakest and “useless” are killed and the strongest are placed on the top. It's generally believed by most modern historians that the Revolutionary Free State’s leadership was never intending on expanding Supolinia’s territory, but simply wanted to maintain control of the islands as they were.

While the Revolutionary Free State purged those deemed “weak”, it began a program of recruiting people deemed intellectually superior. This program was made specifically to advance Supolinia’s technology to those of the rest of Avaris, and the members of the program were given great amounts of incentives to do so, ranging from being relatively protected from being purged by the government to being given high salaries. While this allowed the RFS to gain great amounts of technology at a rapid pace, it also allowed the scientists of the program to see the full extent of the RFS’s atrocities, eventually resulting in them planning their own overthrow of the government.

This overthrow would take place on March 8th, 1985, the day after the leader of the RFS, the self-proclaimed “Grand Protector” Otmar Isaak Hauer, died in his sleep. Thrown into disarray by their leader’s death, the military and National Revolutionary Union would begin waging war against each other, only to both be crushed by the program’s militias, which were armed with the most technologically advanced weapons in Supolinia.

This new “technocratic” government proclaimed the creation of the Supolinian Provisional Government. For five years, the SPG would debate amongst itself what type of government would best be suited for Supolinia. Meanwhile, the people of Supolinia, seemingly tired of the violence and autocratic regimes, pushed for a democratic government, inspired by the likes of Tertania and Ridnez (before the rise of Andreas Bombardone, of course). This democratic movement would eventually convince the SPG to establish the Republic of Supolinia, and elections were called, the first in Supolinia’s history.

The first to be the President of Supolinia would be Jaakob Amundsen, a progressive who was often credited with convincing the Provisional Government to democratize the state with his book, “The Soul of the State; Why the People Matter”. Amundsen would be a popular leader, as he would establish a strong welfare state for citizens, encourage the creation of small businesses (which were often thrown to the wayside during the RFS’s time in power), and oversee a period of economic prosperity.

Amundsen would retire after two terms, to be succeeded by his protege and Vice President, Fynn Bayer. Bayer would maintain much of his predecessor’s policies, but would become extremely unpopular following a brutal terrorist attack orchestrated by the “Sons of Oskar” neo-monarchist movement, and the seeming incompetence of the government in response to the attack. He would be voted out of power after his first term, to be succeeded by Guntram Mattson, a conservative populist who would crack down on the Sons of Oskar movement and similar groups.

Mattson would unsuccessfully run for a third term, and would be succeeded by Ilona Weigand, a moderate liberal who would scale back most of the security measures Mattson had put in place in the aftermath of the Sons of Oskar attack. Alongside being the first woman to be elected president, Weigand would also be the first to win a third term, running on the promise that the economy would continue to grow under her administration.

In 2023, after a period of sudden instability known as the Days of Terror, the Guard of the Storm paramilitary took control of the Supolinian government, executing President Weigand and abolishing all laws. Since then, the Guard has turned the country into a failed state, one where militias run rampant, killing any and all individuals they deem "undesirable".

Geography

Supolinia is a very cold island chain situated in the far north of the Hukanite Sea. Because of how far away it is from the closest continent (that being Noskyavia), Supolinia has been diplomatically isolated for most of its history, resulting in it trailing behind technologically.
